LONDON.- A superb collection of Asian art, lovingly assembled over a decade by a single enthusiast while living and working in the Far East and South East Asia, is for sale at Bonhams Edinburgh on 7 July.

Among the most fascinating pieces is a painting by the internationally celebrated chinese artist Jiang Guo Fang who became a personal friend of the collector when he was living in Shanghai in the early 1990s. The painting, ‘Reclining Court Beauty’ shows a beautiful model posing pensively in the costume of the 19th century chinese court. It is from the artist’s well known ‘Forbidden City’ period and is estimated at £20,000-30,000.

Early 9th Century Burmese Pagan bronzes, stucco heads and votive items epitomise the simplicity and serenity so characteristic of South East Asian art and found elsewhere in the collection in sculptures from Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

The concept of internationalization is projected as this year’s theme. The event’s highlight is two conceptual oil paintings to remember the late King of Pop Michael Jackson.

More than one hundred prestigious art galleries from different continents around the globe will take part in this year’s event. Various art schools and genres including abstract and realism will give visitors and buyers a huge pool of choices.

The two conceptual oil paintings by American Chinese artist Zhou Chi are drawing huge attention. They were created to commemorate the one year anniversary of the death of American pop singer Michael Jackson.

The curly hair of young Michael is turned into the eleven black phonograph albums he released during his lifetime.

A flurry of institutions and cultural centres open as 100 million visitors are expected...

SHANGHAI. As preparations for the World Expo in Shanghai (1 May-31 October) reach fever pitch, several new museums and cultural spaces are opening in readiness to welcome some of the 100 million visitors, which officials estimate will attend. Foreign journalists in Shanghai have estimated the total costs of the expo at around $45bn, not including off-site developments.

Leading the swathe of new cultural attractions is the Rockbund Art Museum, housed in a converted 1932 art deco building on Shanghai’s historic riverfront, restored and with interior design by British architect David Chipperfield. The building was previously home to the Royal Asiatic Society, and is next to the former site of the Shanghai British Consulate.
